In early 1990, the BBC asked Kevin Godley to make a film featuring musicians from diverse cultures, to create the finale to the One World Week project they were sharing with broadcasters around the globe. The initial idea was to stage a great concert featuring a wealth of international talent. Instead, Kevin pitched the idea of creating a ‘chain tape’, whereby the producers would visit the artists, as opposed to bringing everyone together in one place. Together with a trusty team that included legendary record producer Rupert Hine, recording engineer Stephen W Tayler, Producer Andy Ward and Cameraman Joe Dyer, Kevin set out for New York at the end of February 1990. Over the next three months, the team would criss-cross the globe, ultimately working with 292 musicians of 16 different nationalities at 26 different venues. These ranged from Dave Gilmour’s houseboat studio on the Thames to a beach in Dar es Salaam; finally culminating in a grand finale with conductor Simon Jeffes and the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra in Russia. As you’ll see from the original BBC schedule below, the team went a very long way to ensure that One World One Voice is World Music in the very truest sense.
